Indeed, ensuring that the utmost care is taken to nurture children during such a crucial period in their development is of paramount importance.

Among those who are quick to critique the education system, few have voiced their opinions as powerfully as a retired teacher who gained widespread attention a few years ago.

Lisa Roberson is the teacher whose open letter, published in the Augusta Chronicle in 2017, continues to fuel discussions about whether the challenges facing the education system are the fault of parents or teachers.

It’s significant to recognize that this letter was written before the pandemic, preceding the major adjustments made to facilitate education during the COVID crisis.

The changes enacted during that challenging period received mixed responses from Americans, indicating that many have a lot to say about the current state of education and potential solutions.

For Roberson, however, the issue does not stem from teachers, as some have suggested recently, but rather from the parents of the students themselves.

Insights from a Retired Teacher

In her letter, Lisa expressed, "As a retired teacher, I am frustrated with individuals who lack knowledge about public schooling or haven’t been in a classroom lately determining how to improve our education system." } ,{

"The educators are not the issue! The real problem lies with parents! They fail to teach their children manners, respect, or even fundamental social skills." } ,{

"Children show up to school in expensive shoes that often exceed the cost of a teacher’s entire outfit, yet they lack basic supplies like pencils and paper. Who ends up providing these? Often, it’s the teachers, who sometimes pay for these essentials out of their own funds." } ,{

"When examining schools labeled as ‘failing,’ it’s critical to consider the parents and students. Are parents attending meetings? Are they communicating with teachers regularly? Are they ensuring their children are equipped with necessary materials? Are they supervising homework completion?" } ,{

"Do parents keep updated contact information? Do students take notes? Complete their homework? Are they attentive in class, or do they disrupt the learning environment?" } ,{

"When you evaluate these elements, it becomes clear that the fault does not lie with schools, but rather with the parents. Teachers cannot fulfill their roles effectively if parents do not also engage in their responsibilities. Until parents step up, improvements are unlikely!" } ,{

The letter from this retired educator certainly generated considerable reactions and raises essential points that merit discussion.

What are your thoughts on this letter? Should parents bear the blame, or do teachers shoulder the entire responsibility? We’d love to hear your opinions.
