Morgan Wallen’s Abrupt SNL Exit Sparks Controversy: What Really Happened?

Morgan Wallen is once again at the center of controversy after his unexpected exit from Saturday Night Live on March 29, 2025. The country singer served as the musical guest for SNL Season 50, Episode 15, performing I’m the Problem and Just in Case from his upcoming fourth studio album, I’m the Problem. But when it came time for the usual end-of-show gathering on stage, Wallen made a beeline for the exit instead of sticking around with the cast and host, recent Oscar-winner Mikey Madison.

Why Did Morgan Wallen Walk Off?
The moment immediately sparked speculation online. As the credits rolled, the SNL cast and Madison stayed on stage, hugging and celebrating as is tradition. Wallen, however, exchanged a quick hug with Madison and then exited without acknowledging the cast. Fans noticed his absence, and speculation grew when Wallen later posted an Instagram story from a plane with the caption: “Get me to God’s country.”

Some viewers interpreted his post as a slight toward SNL, suggesting that Wallen was eager to leave, possibly due to the show’s history of satirizing political figures he has publicly supported. However, Variety later reported that sources close to Wallen said there was no ill intent behind his abrupt departure. The country star allegedly “had a good time” on SNL and simply made a mistake by leaving too soon.

Kenan Thompson Reacts to Wallen’s Departure
Even long-time SNL cast member Kenan Thompson admitted that Wallen’s move was unusual. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Thompson expressed confusion:

“I don’t know what goes through people’s minds when they decide to do stuff like that. I don’t know if he understood the assignment or not, or if he was really feeling a certain kind of way … It’s definitely a spike in the norm.”

Thompson noted that the sudden exit was especially noticeable since it was already a small group on stage.

Morgan Wallen’s Complicated History with SNL
This isn’t Wallen’s first controversy with the show. In October 2020, he was originally scheduled to perform as SNL’s musical guest but was removed after videos surfaced of him breaking COVID-19 protocols. Jack White replaced him at the last minute. Wallen later issued an apology and was given another chance, performing on the December 5, 2020 episode.

Now, more than four years later, his actions have once again raised eyebrows. However, despite the internet’s theories, Wallen’s team insists there’s no drama—just an awkward exit that has now turned into yet another viral moment.
